In tournament poker, your goal is survive long enough to make it into the money. Chips have relative value in a poker tournament. If you have 5000 chips in the early stages of the tournament, and everyone else has only 2500, that means nothing. You don’t win any money unless you keep some of those chips into the money.

When you get to the bubble, the point where you’re either going to bust out or land in the money, and you have a really small number of chips, then your chips are more valuable than ever.

The most important thing to learn about poker tournament strategy is that the blinds are everything. Early in the tournament, the blinds represent a tiny portion of your stack, so it’s wise to play very tight. You don’t want to get into a situation where you’re going to bust out early. But later in the tournament, you want to avoid losing a large portion of your stack to the blinds because you played too tight.

The simplest way of explaining this strategy? Play tight early in the tournament, and loosen up and get aggressive later in the tournament.
