The monthly Dusk Till Dawn Texas Hold’em poker tournament got underway in Nottingham to a record attendance. Only one week after breaking the UK poker tournament sites attendance record, poker players took their seats at the largest ever £300 monthly main event. With the event being televised, 459 players took part to generate a prize pool of £137,700 easily beating the organiser’s £100,000 guarantee. Texas Hold’em poker is a popular game on sites like Poker 888.
The event ran for two days and the final table negotiated an 8 way chop to guarantee each player at least £9,000 in prize money. The top three played for an additional £17,000 split three ways with the eventual winner, Paul Browser, taking home £20,000. This was nearly half of the original first place value of £39,488 but still a great return on his £300 buy-in fee. He beat Danny Tran in heads up play to claim the top spot.
The week before this unprecedented dusk till dawn main event, the UK tournament attendance record was also beat. 900 players took to the poker tables in the £50 DTD Grand Prix event to beat the previous record of 848, held by this year’s EPT London Main Event. It not only beat the record, it also sold out a week in advance. Simon Trumper, the tournament director, said “We are delighted at the response and the backing of the poker community in achieving this amazing turnout, for the lucky ones that have got in we are sure next weekend will be an amazing experience and look forward to welcoming you to dusk till dawn. I can’t wait to announce shuffle up and deal to the first 450 players next Friday”.
The Dusk Till Dawn owner, Rob Yong, was also pleased with the turn-out, and in a recent update he hinted at possibly expanding the event next year. He said “Looking at the emails to our support team and in the club, this event was oversubscribed by at least 400 to 500 players. This obviously means a field of 1300 to 1500 people is possible for us in the future. For now, I want to see how we cope with the 900 guests over Friday – Sunday, before we look at doing this type of event again. The Norwegian Poker Championships, and the Pokerstars UKIPT were big events, but the Grand Prix will be the most demanding so far due to the sheer amount of entries in the tournament. We estimate Saturday could see us having over 800 people in the building; it’s a good job that we have been able to get the marquee at short notice!”
Poker in Europe has taken off over the last decade. UK sites like William Hill are offering greater rewards to keep up with increased European competition all the time. With these latest figures, it seems there will be more poker tables on even bigger and better poker tournament sites in the near future.
