The basic poker rules are the same between both Texas Hold’em and Omaha, but the differences make playing the game as drastic as night and day. Both poker games are going to start with the ante, an initial bet put in to promote first round betting. This bet is called the big blind, and the poker player to the big blind’s right puts in half the initial bet, called the little blind.
Once the blinds are out, everybody is dealt their cards. In Texas Hold’em, you will receive two cards that you are going to use at least one of, in addition to any cards on the table to make the best hand. In Omaha, you will get four cards, and you have to use two and only two in addition to three of the five cards that come out on the table. That complex nuance is at the heart of the difference in the rules between poker games.
After you have been dealt your cards, there will be a round of betting, with the lowest bet being the same as the big blind. In a no limit game, betting can be as little as the big blind, but as large as your entire stack of chips. In a pot-limit game, a poker player can only raise, or bet more than the player before them, to a maximum of what is already in the pot, including their call. For example, if there is $20 in the pot at the beginning of the round and Player A bets $10, Player B can raise a maximum of $40. ($20 + $10 + $10) The poker rules here are very technical, but with a few hands of play, it will become natural to you.
After this first round of betting, three cards are laid out. There is another round of betting and another card, referred to as the turn, comes out. More betting, and then one last card. It is this last round of betting that tends to be the most heated as the few players that are left know the entirety of their hand, and can bet with the knowledge that they possess the potential best hand. Which hands win are the same in all styles of poker rules.
Texas Hold’em and Omaha have similar poker rules and mechanics, but with amazingly varied play styles. Try both, and see which one you prefer.
